Gregory Payne, a graduate of Dartmouth College and Stanford Law School, spent 10 years in corporate law on Wall Street with large New York and Washington based law firms. In 1986 Payne took a position with then-small animation producer DIC Entertainment where he became Executive Vice President-Legal/Business Affairs. He oversaw all Legal, Administration, Music and Operations for the studio spearheading production, distribution, corporate and financing transactions for the Company. During his tenure, DIC grew to be the one of the largest independent animation studios in the world with a library of more than 3,000 half hour programs.
In 1999 he set up his own private legal practice, specializing in Entertainment and Corporate Law with clients such as Technicolor Digital Productions; Super 78; Cartoon Network; The Gotham Group; Nippon TV; Kadokawa Pictures; Production I.G.; Aniplex; Waterman Entertainment, among others. Between 2009 and March 2018 he was Chief Operating Officer, Corporate Secretary and Executive Vice President-Legal/Business Affairs of A Squared Entertainment, then NASDAQ-listed animation and brand management company, Genius Brands International.
In addition to his law practice, in 2000, along with his wife, Jo Kavanagh-Payne, he also established Foothill Entertainment, which acts as executive producers specializing in the distribution and co-production of children’s and family entertainment. His experience spans from negotiating and drafting production, distribution and talent agreements to labor relations, corporate mergers and acquisitions.
